The Atelier Is Taking Shape

I’ve been having so much fun collecting materials and open-ended toys for the atelier. Every time I find something special, I immediately start imagining how the children might use it.

I’m drawn to things that don’t have one “right” way to play. A basket can be filled and emptied, a scarf can disappear into a box, and a wooden object can be carried around all morning for reasons known only to the child. Babies don’t need a lot of stuff. They need a few really good things and the time to figure them out for themselves.

It’s starting to feel real down there, and I keep finding excuses to go look at it.

I also planted the raised bed, which made me ridiculously happy. It’s a small thing, but it changed the feeling of the whole garden. I can already picture the children noticing new leaves, touching the soil, and checking on it every day.

And downstairs, I went all in on color drenching with low-VOC paint. The walls and trim in the main room and nap room are wrapped in the same color, so the rooms feel cozy, enveloping, and almost womb-like. That was exactly what I wanted: warm and calming, but still simple enough for the children and their play to be the focus.

There’s still plenty to do, but the space is finally beginning to feel like Infant Atelier instead of a renovation project. Seeing the toys on the shelves, the garden growing, and the rooms painted has made me even more excited to welcome children into this little place we’re making for them.
